
Its been 12 months, to the day, since I put in a bid to win my new home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast……
My intention is to leave “big picture tourism photography” over the next five years to concentrate on photo essays like this one I’ve just drawn from my archives on the land diving ritual of Pentecost Island. So much tends to be overlooked rushing around in search of that one big promotional photo. So, I look forward to slowing it all down, spending longer in the countries I visit, and capturing images like these that tell a deeper, richer story.
Now, I know Stoic philosophy doesn’t appear to have a lot to do with travel photography, but I wanted to share with other photographers what a hugely valuable resource it has become to me in terms of the challenges I know we all face in this profession – the uncertainty of income, the changes in expectations, the pressure of delivering quality to shortened deadlines, and some of the people we have to put up with to earn a living …
The fact I had four web sites spread across three different host providers, with domain names and passwords scattered to the wind, pretty-well guaranteed building my new web site was never going to be a walk in the park.
It turns out I would have been more comfortable spending two months in a dentist‘s chair.
