I’m over in Fiji at the moment on a five day shoot for Westpac Bank. Its not my usual gig (ie tourism) but I’m enjoying shooting to a different brief (actually the clearest brief I’ve ever received – a 12 page document of pics and direction, with a simple summary of key points at the end. Perfect). Cleverly, Westpac has developed what it calls a dynamic style of photography that’s distinct to its brand and its looking to carry that look into the South Pacific. Assuming I deliver the goods, its likely we’ll build on what’s done in Fiji and apply it throughout 12 countries in the region. The imagery they want is candid and friendly – more documentary in style than I’m used to which is great as I’m not having to focus on perfect lighting, stylish wardrobes, props and scouring the planet for super handsome talent. They want their customers and staff shot as they appear in real life – not posed. Shooting finance and industry is a different mind set to capturing the aspirational imagery I normally shoot in tourism but I like the idea of mixing it up a bit and shooting from the hip, studying my subject differently and producing images not traditionally associated with a major bank. And adding a bit of “Pacific personality” to soften the appearance of a global banking institution and make it more appealing is not your everyday challenge, so I’m happy. Here’s an early sample of some of the images captured (below):
