As I wrote earlier, I’m just back from a 10 day cruise of Papua New Guinea on the luxury vessel True North but, before I left, I decided I’d look to put together a “Storyboard” – a visual essay if you like – of the trip (below).
The vehicle combines the tourism images I normally shoot with a bit of post-production art and a good dose of marketing aimed at giving viewers a better sense of what the trip was about and what they are likely to experience. It requires a lot more effort and a very different approach to the task – ie incidental shots are a lot more important, visual cameos need to be pre-conceived to tell part of a story, and images need to be shot with post production techniques in mind. But, most importantly, you are shooting aware that its the combination of images, rather than a single image, that will tell the story.
It’s been fun to step outside my comfort zone and look for more than the “big pictures” and I can certainly see potential for this style of shooting elsewhere …..We’ll see in the new year.
