At the beginning of this year, I was invited to feature my work in the Head-On Photographic Exhibition in Sydney – Australia’s showcase event for photographers. As excited as I was, my assignment schedule didn’t allow for it so I had to withdraw. It was a huge disappointment but, I reasoned, hopefully just a pause in the journey I’ve embarked on to draw attention to the value and vulnerability of the South Pacific’s indigenous cultures.
Three weeks from now, 20 of my fine art photographs of Papua New Guinea – some up to two metres in size – will be unveiled in the country’s National Museum and Art Gallery as part of the South Pacific’s 5th Melanesian Festival of Culture and Art. The exhibition, which will draw largely from my latest book, Tribal PNG, is being sponsored by the event organisers and Tim has been madly getting everything ready while I’ve been away on assignment. You can see several of the prints by clicking on the card at the top of this post, the invitations and catalogues (below) are being finalised as I type and 10 of my books have been purchased as corporate gifts for attending dignitaries.
It’s a promising start to the 10 year plan I began at the start of this year which would see me devoting an increasing amount of my time to promoting the importance of indigenous culture throughout the South Pacific.
Anyway, gotta go write my speech. I’ll let you know how it all goes.
