A Mekeo performer at the Melanesian Cultural Festival
It’s great to be in Papua New Guinea again – this time shooting the Melanesian Cultural Festival over the next 10 days. It’s a once every four years event, this year being hosted by PNG.
Here’s a Mekeo performer (above) from the Central Province of PNG and a Chimbu highlander (below)
I did the press conference for my photographic exhibition today with TV, newspapers and radio all turning up to hear me on my soapbox talking about the erosion of traditional cultures throughout the region. I’ll spend tomorrow shooting the festival before officially unveiling the exhibition at the national gallery the day after.
All 24 prints made it over without getting damaged (well done Tim) and they’ve been well presented. Invites have gone out, catalogues have also been delivered.
Expect a colourful preview to follow in the next post and news of how the launch went. I’ll also post some tips on how to shoot a cultural event in PNG.
